Of Meghnad Desai, racism in Australia and cricket1.552

In a recent column in the Indian Express, (Lord) Meghnad Desai came up with a fantastic theory. He speculated that the recent spate of attacks on Indian students in Australia were not a result of lawlessness or racism – the two prevailing arguments. But instead he proposed that this violence was a result of cricketing passion!!

He argues that the anti-Indian feeling is a result of various cricketing events; India defeating Australia in a recent series, the Harbajan Singh/Andrew Symonds episode, and thereafter India reaching the top spot in cricket – long the exclusive preserve of the Australian cricket team. Lord Desai believes that Aussie pub drinkers get around to bemoaning the decline of Australian cricket and then work themselves into enough of a drunken frenzy to go around bashing Indians. He also likens this to the aggression that surfaced in the “bodyline” Ashes series in the thirties.

As theories go, this is absurd!

Not only is it absurd, it suggests that Aussies tend to beat up citizens of countries they lose to in sports!

Maybe that’s the reason why they don’t play baseball.
